AN Islamic youth organisation has been accused of driving customers away from a shopping centre because their devotees' cars are jamming the carpark.
The Global Islamic Youth Centre, known for its radical teachings, has been told by Liverpool Council to stop conducting daytime classes and prayer sessions at the centre.
Ten shopowners said they they began complaining to council in 2011 that a function centre above their shops off the Hume Highway at Casula, in Sydney's southwest, was being used to conduct activities without permission and at times that had not been approved.
They claim the Global Sports and Function Centre was granted development approval to conduct evening functions at the first floor premises, but was instead allowing GIYC classes and prayers during the day.
Global Sports and the GIYC share the same phone number and the GIYC's website is advertising day classes at the Casula premises starting as recently as August 19. Neither organisation responded to requests for comment.
On August 7 the council wrote to Global Sports warning them they must only operate at night.
Casula Fruit World owner Saliba Wahhab said frustration over council inaction boiled over in July when a council officer allegedly shoulder charged him.
Mr Wahhab reported the alleged assault to police but no charges resulted due to a lack of evidence. Liverpool councillor Tony Hadchiti confirmed the contract of the officer involved was terminated following the incident.
REASON TO NEVER GRANT ANY ISLAMIC ORGANIZATION PERMIT TO OPERATE IN BUSINESS DISTRICT.
