Swedish police said Thursday they have arrested five men on suspicion of smuggling more than 50 Syrian nationals to the Scandinavian country in two separate incidents.
Four men were arrested on Wednesday after a bus with 45 Syrians was stopped on the Oresund bridge that Sweden shares with Denmark, a police spokesperson said.
The four men were being investigated on suspicion of organized people smuggling or possibly aggravated people smuggling "due to the large number of people involved," Linda Pleym told dpa.
A few hours later, a van with six Syrians was stopped on the bridge and the driver was arrested on suspicion of people smuggling, Pleym said.
Investigators have not said whether the two cases were linked.
During the first six months of the year the number of Syrian asylum seekers totalled 4,750, compared to 1,190 applications in the first half of 2012, the agency said.
