India's army and police struggled Sunday to contain sectarian violence as weekend clashes between Hindus and Muslims left at least 16 people dead and dozens more injured.
Thousands of security forces, including nearly 800 soldiers and hundreds of armed police were patrolling the Muzaffarnagar area in Uttar Pradesh state and enforcing a curfew Sunday night in an effort to prevent more fighting.
Rioting on Saturday killed 10 people. At least six more were killed Sunday, according to Arun Kumar, a senior police official.
Kamal Saxena, Home Secretary in Uttar Pradesh, said text messages and YouTube videos of communal violence were being used to arouse religious sentiment.
"Any such episode is not spontaneous but is orchestrated," said Badri Narayan, a professor at the GB Pant Social Science Institute in Uttar Pradesh. "Politicians have launched aggressive campaigning for communal mobilization through small clashes that will create fear and animosity."

Muslims in the area said confrontations began after a road accident, while Hindus said the dispute arose after two men of their community intervened to prevent the harassment of a Hindu girl, according to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
On Saturday, thousands of Hindu villagers held a meeting to demand justice for the killings. A senior official of the state administration said provocative speeches were made at the meeting intended to touch off tensions between the two communities.
