Canada is putting up more than $1.2 million to promote religious freedom in countries where there is intolerance.
"The promotion and protection of religious freedom continues to be a priority for our government," Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Monday. "(This) announcement signals our continued commitment to promoting this fundamental Canadian value around the world.
"Canada is committed to working with Nigerian institutions, government and civil-society representatives to promote freedom of religion and human rights for all Nigerians. We want to bring the Canadian experience to others."
Plans call for more than $553,000 to be spent on a two-year project to promote community dialogue and conflict mediation in Nigeria's Plateau State, where more than 5,000 have died since 2001 in clashes between the Muslim Hausa-Fulani community and the Christian Berom community.
Another $670,000 will be earmarked for a three-year initiative in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and South Caucasus to promote international standards of freedom of religion.
"The goals of the Office of Religious Freedom reflect the core values of Canadian democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law," said Andrew Bennett, Canada's ambassador for religious freedom.
