The Muslims for Peace Foundation based in Bangkok on Thursday demanded that the soap opera, or lakhorn, Fah Jarod Sai be taken off the air because its contents misrepresent the religion of Islam and defame Muslims, a report said.
The foundation handed copies of their petition to Bangkok Broadcasting and Television which operates Channel 7, Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap, and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).
Fah Jarod Sai, directed by Siam Sungvaribudh, is broadcast on Channel 7 on Monday and Tuesday nights. It is a romantic story set in the desert innvolving a mixed-race Thai girl named Michelle and Sharif, a royal officer in the made-up kingdom of Hinfara.
Fah Farod Sai, or Where the Sky Meets the Sand, is adapted from a popular novel of the same name authored by Sopak Suwan.
The foundation argued that that the television programme contorted the teachings of Islam, disrespecting and disparaging the religion and its believers.
The soap opera also misled viewers into believing that the religion of Islam allows Muslims to be cruel to children and women, which is a contradiction of the facts, the group isaid.
"We are afraid that the lakhorn could eventually have large-scale and upredictable effects on Muslims if the ICT Ministry and the NBTC do not cancel Fah Jarod Sai," the Muslim for Peace Foundation letter said.
"UNPREDICTABLE EFFECTS ON MUSLIMS" MEANS WE WILL RIOT,KILL AND BURN DOWN YOUR CITY IF YOU DON'T GIVE IN TO OUR DEMANDS,PROVING THAT SOAP OPERA IS NOT MISREPRESENTING ISLAM.
