A London mother was hacked to death with machetes in front of her 12-year-old son in Bangladesh by jealous relatives, her family said today.
Rehana Begum, 43, a housewife from Hackney, was in the country visiting her mother and siblings with her husband Abdul Kadir and son Rakib.
She was murdered by men said to be envious of her money. When her 15-year-old niece Sunia tried to intervene they chopped off her right hand.
The attack happened on Friday in the village of Patli in the Sunamganj province in the north-east of the country as the family gathered to watch Rakib swim in an outdoor pool.
Mrs Begun’s sister Rufia, 45, suddenly spotted around half a dozen relatives approaching with machetes.
Mrs Begum’s cousin Sheela Ali, 33, from Hackney, said: “Rufia shouted at them, ‘What are you doing?’ One of them attacked her and stabbed her in the head and the arms. She said to Rehana, ‘Run away. Save yourself’. ”
As Mrs Begum tried to flee she slipped on the floor and was set upon by the gang. Her 10-year-old nephew Rumon and niece Rabia were also injured trying to defend the mother-of-one and are being treated in hospital.
“They kept saying, ‘Make sure she is dead. Keep stabbing her’, ” said Mrs Ali. The men then fled the scene in a people carrier.
Mrs Ali said she believed the attack had been prompted by envy over Mrs Begum’s perceived wealth.
“Being somebody from England in Bangladesh you are relatively wealthy,” she said. “These people have always had this jealousy of this lady who is earning more money than them.”
