A court heard Azhar Uddin raped the woman as she slept in her Bristol flat after a party.
The 31-year-old was jailed for three years at Bristol Crown Court yesterday by a judge who told him he faced deportation to his home country of Pakistan when he was released from jail.
Richard Posner, prosecuting, said the woman awoke in just her vest top to find a naked Uddin kissing and "smothering" her.
After the woman reported him to police Uddin, 31, of Victoria Park, Fishponds, pleaded guilty to rape.
David Miller, defending, said his client had been funded by his family to take a media course at the City of Bristol College.
He said that when floods struck in Pakistan in 2011 Uddin worked as a kitchen assistant and sent half his earnings back home to help his "destitute" family.
Both Uddin's mother and father were very ill, the court was told.
Mr Miller said Uddin was sexually inexperienced and thought women were interested in him when they were just being friendly.
He said: "He comes from a strict Muslim family.
"He has brought utter shame on his family and himself.
"He's liable for automatic deportation to Pakistan.
"I urge the court to show mercy, for his parents."
